My First Trip to a Spiritual Medium

I have always been kind of fascinated by psychics, mystics, and other experts in the occult arts. Nonetheless, I have been pretty intimidated by them in the past. I was raised in a pretty conservative family, and our religious values went against spiritual mediums. My parents were very suspicious of anyone who claimed to have occult knowledge or skills, and would keep us away from such mundane activities as playing with Ouija boards or tarot cards.

Nonetheless, the time comes for everyone to make their own way and define their own values. For me, that time was about two months ago. A friend of mine was having a get together with a few of her close friends. One of these folks was a pretty well known local spiritual medium. I felt like this would be the perfect chance to pick the brains of someone involved in the occult arts.

Every spiritual medium has his or her own take on the world of the spirits. Some psychic mediums have a very elaborate cosmology involving different spirits in different realms of the after life. The woman I was talking to, however, had a much more simplistic view. She felt that God had given her a gift to see and speak with the spirits. She did not know why she had this gift, where those spirits came from, or who God was. She simply knew when she was being addressed by a ghost and what that ghost had to say.

I had always expected spiritual mediums to be very dramatic people. After all, when people start dealing with "the unknown," there is a natural tendency to get a bit theatrical. The neat thing about this spiritual medium was that she was not theatrical. To her, it was just a matter of everyday events. She would have talks with ghosts, go to the store and buy groceries, tell someone's future, or read her kids a bedtime story. These were simply the things that she went through each and every day.

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was when I asked her about astrology. She was not a big fan of astrological charts, but she did use them from time to time. The thing that got me was, in our conversation about astrology, she casually mentioned my sign, told me some things about my personality related to the sign, and even mentioned some details about my personal life that she could not have known. To this day, I have no idea where she got all that.
